Activities in association with UNICEF


INDIA NGO is partnering with UN organisations continuously for nearly three decades. The following are some of the major activities of our organisation jointly with UNICEF.


  • Capacity building of School heads, Teachers and Block level Educational officials, on challenges in promoting sanitation & Hygiene in Schools during the pandemic (2021)
  • Capacity building of Municipal functionaries, on challenges in promoting sanitation, Hygiene and managing the solid wastes during the pandemic (2021)
  • Supply of Nutrition & Hygiene kit to Municipal frontline workers during the pandemic (2021)
  • Supply of Thermal scanners, Masks, Hand sanitiser & Liquid soap for hand wash to Schools in Chennai, Kanchipuram, Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu, and Dharmapuri & Krishnagiri Districts. (2021)
  • Providing Technical Assistance to Tamil Nadu Education Department for achieving sustainable and equitable access of WASH facilities (Water, Sanitation & Hygiene) in the Schools of the following 12 Districts of Tamil Nadu (2019-2020). The total number of schools promoted to a higher star category is 510.
  • Capacity building of Teachers and School Heads on Sanitation & Hygiene promotion in the schools of Kanchipuram, Tiruvallur, Krishnagiri & Dharmapuri districts (WASHin Schools - 2018)
  • Extended “Technical support to CII for promoting model schools of WASH in Sriperumpudhur block, Kanchipuram District” – Construction activities funded by Saint Gobain India Private Limited (2016-17)
  • Capacity building of Teachers and School Heads on Sanitation & Hygiene promotion in the Districts of Kanchipuram, Tiruvallur, Krishnagiri & Dharmapuri (WinS - 2016, 2017 & 2018)
  • Conducted 5 Regional workshop programmes to train Block Resource Teacher Educators in charge of Civil works of Samagra Siksha (SSA) from all over Tamilnadu – Promoting Hand washing stations in the schools of Tamil Nadu (UNICEF – SSA – INDIA NGO) (2017)
  • Conducted a State level workshop programme on “Muzhu Sugadhara Tamizhagam” for capacity building of Chief Educational Officers of Tamilnadu (UNICEF – SSA – INDIA NGO) (2016)
  • Promoting WASH model schools - 15 Schools promoted as WASH model Schools in Dharmapuri District with the support of UNICEF (2014)
  • Promoted 1,000 + schools of Krishnagiri District as model schools under WASH in Schools (WinS) programme with UNICEF support. (2008 – 2014)
  • Capacity building of Teachers and School Heads on WASH in Schools in Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Madurai, Theni, Tiruchirappalli, Virudhunagar, Erode, Salem, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur, Cuddalore, Villupuram, Vellore & Tiruvannamalai districts

Activities in association with ERNST & Young foundation (2019-2020)

Our NGO promotes model Schools of Water harvesting, reusing the used water and WASH in School activities, jointly with Ernst & Young Foundation. During 2019-20, the following two schools were promoted, as model schools.

1. Municipal Higher Secondary School, Hastinapuram
Recharging of the ground water through unused well by harvesting the rain water from the roof top, Refurbishing of Girl’s Toilet blocks, improvement of Hand-washing structures, Providing safe drinking water and Improvising the Drinking water plant and improvement of Bore well were the activities carried out in the school.


2. Jaigopal Garodia Government Girls Higher Secondary School, Nanganallur
Recharging of the ground water by harvesting the rain water from the roof top, providing a new Bore well for adequate water supply, Retrofitting of Boys & Girl’s Toilet blocks, improvement of Hand-washing structures, Construction of Group Hand-washing station, Providing safe drinking water and Wise Water Management activities were carried out in the school

UNICEF - Birla Carbon - INDIA NGO (2015- 2021)

The Birla Carbon industry is extending their support to our organisation for various activities from 2015 onwards. The following are some of the activities undertaken with their support.

  • Promoted Govt. Higher Secondary School, New Gummidipoondi as a WASH model school (2021) - Refurbishment of 3 Toilet blocks as Girl friendly Toilet blocks, Construction of 2 Group Hand washing stations, Construction of a Boys Toilet Block, Refurbishment of a Boys Toilet block and Wise Water Management activities were carried out in the school (2021- March)
  • Promoted “Centre for Children with Special Needs”, Gummidpoondi as a Child Friendly Centre - Improvised the Centre for Children with Special Needs, Gummidpoondi (Non- Residential Training centres for inclusive Education) run by Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan as a child friendly centre (2017)
  • Promoted Government Girls Higher Secondary School, Gummidipoondi as a WASH in Schools model - Refurbishment of 3 Toilet blocks as Girl friendly Toilet blocks, improvement of Hand-washing structures, Construction of Group Hand-washing station and Wise Water Management activities were carried out in the school (2017)
  • Promoted Government Girls High School, Madharpakkam. Gummidipoondi Block, Tiruvallur District. Refurbishing 2 Toilet blocks as Girls-friendly Blocks and construction of a Group hand Washing Station are the works done in the school. (2015)
  • Promoted Government High School, S.R.Kandiagai, Gummidipoondi Block, Tiruvallur District. Refurbishing of a Toilet block as Girls-friendly Block, construction of Hand Wash facility and construction of new user-friendly Toilet block for Boys are the activities completed (2017)
  • Panchayat Union Primary School, S.R.Kandiagai, Gummidipoondi Block, Tiruvallur District. Refurbishment of a Toilet block as Girls-friendly toilet block, construction of a Hand Wash facility and construction of new user-friendly Toilet block for Boys are the activities completed. (2017)
  • Panchayat Union Middle School (School for Sri Lankan Refugees children), Gummidipoondi, Tiruvallur District. Refurbishing a Toilet block as Girls-friendly, construction of Group Hand Washing Station, Refurbishing a Toilet block for Male & Female staff separately, Compound wall and Toilet facility for the differently able Children (2018)

Activities in Association with SYMRISE – United Way of Chennai

Refurbishing of 2 Toilet blocks as Girls-friendly WASH facility, Refurbishing of a Latrine Block and improving the same with Menstrual Hygiene management facility, Refurbishing of 2 Toilet blocks as user-friendly for Boys, construction of Group Hand Washing Stations in 2 places, Refurbishing of a Toilet block for Male & Female staff separately,


Toilet facility for the Differently abled Children, Refurbishing of Hand wash facility in 2 different locations, Pathways for reaching all WASH facilities,


Safe water through RO Plant and Wise Water Management. The activities were completed in association with United Way of Chennai and with the funding support of SYMRISE.

Activities in Association with CAMS – United Way of Chennai

The Government Higher Secondary School, Maduravoyal promoted as a WASH model school in Association with United Way, Chennai. The activities carried out were:

Refurbishing 2 Toilet blocks as Girls-friendly blocks, refurbishing a Girls Toilet Block and improved the same with Menstrual Hygiene management facility, 3 Toilet blocks for boys were refurbished as user-friendly Toilet Blocks and Hand-washing facility in 2 different locations. Students and teachers trained for promoting sustained use and maintenance of WASH facilities. (2018)

Activities in Association with PSG DOVER – United Way of Chennai

The Panchayat Union Middle School, Manali Pudhunagar, Tiruvallur District was one of the worst affected schools during the Chennai Floods in 2015. We refurbished all the 15 Classrooms and improved the floor with Anti-skid ceramic flooring tiles. Painted attractive drawings to improve the class room walls. Doors and windows of the Class rooms were refurbished.


Toilet facility for the Differently abled Children, Refurbishing of Hand wash facility in 2 different locations, Pathways for reaching all WASH facilities,


2 Toilet blocks were improved as a Girls-friendly WASH facility and one toilet block for boys was also improved as a user-friendly toilet. A Hand wash facility is provided and a part of the compound wall was also reconstructed. (2017).

Activities in Association with ICICI Prudential – United Way of Chennai

Our NGO worked in the following schools in association with the United Way of Chennai for improving the WASH facility. The activities in the following 5 schools were supported by ICICI Prudential.

  1. Government High School, Paiyanur, Kanchipuram District. Refurbishing of 2 Toilet blocks as Girls-friendly, Refurbishing of a Latrine Block and improving the same with Menstrual Hygiene management facility, Refurbishing of 2 Toilet blocks as user-friendly for Boys and construction of a Hand Washing facility were the activities completed in the school.
  2. Panchayat Union Primary School, Paiyanur, Kanchipuram District.
  3. The activities completed in the school are: Refurbishing of a Toilet block as Girls-friendly block, Refurbishing of a Toilet block as user-friendly for Boys, providing Hand wash facility in 1 place and Drawing of Pictures in and around all classrooms to improve the environment.
  4. Panchayat Union Primary School, Mettu Thandalam, Kanchipuram District. Refurbishing of a Toilet block as Girls-friendly, Refurbishing of a Toilet block as user-friendly for Boys, Hand wash facility in 1 place and Drawing of Pictures in Toilet Blocks were the activities carried out in the school.
  5. Panchayat Union Primary School, Thaiyur, Kanchipuram District.
  6. Refurbishing of a Toilet block as Girls-friendly, Refurbishing of 2 Toilet blocks as user-friendly for Boys, Staff Toilet improvement, Hand wash facility in 1 place and Drawing of Pictures in and around all classrooms were the activities completed to improve the WASH condition of the school.
  7. Panchayat Union Primary School, Velichai, Kanchipuram District.
  8. Refurbishing of a Toilet block as a Girls-friendly block, Refurbishing of a Toilet block as a user-friendly facility for Boys, Hand wash facility in 1 place and Drawing of Pictures in Toilet Block were the activities completed in the school.

Activities in Association with GE & United Way of Chennai

In association with United Way, the WASH in School activities of our NGO was extended to 5 schools of Chennai city. The funding support for hardware activities in the following 5 schools was given by GE.

In addition to the innovative hardware activities carried out, our organisation conducted capacity building activities to promote sustained use and maintenance of the facilities and Child-centred governance with the support of UNICEF. (2018). The schools benefitted by the project and the activities:

  1. Jaigopal Garodia Government Girls Higher Secondary School, Choolaimedu, Chennai. Refurbishing of 2 Toilet blocks as Girls-friendly WASH facilities, Refurbishing of a Latrine Block and improving the same with Menstrual Hygiene management facility, Hand-washing facility in 4 places, Providing a drinking water station and wise water management (Zero waste management & Rainwater harvesting) were the activities completed in the school to promote the school as a WASH in School model.
  2. Chennai Higher Secondary School, Nungampakkam, Chennai. The activities completed in the school to make it as a model school are; Refurbishment of 4 Toilet blocks as user-friendly facility for Boys; Hand washing facility in 2 places; Providing a drinking water station; Wise water management (Zero waste management – Rain water harvesting) activities
  3. Chennai Higher Secondary School, Shenoynagar, Chennai. Refurbishment of 3 number of Toilet blocks as user-friendly toilet facility for boys, Refurbishment of 1 girls block and Hand washing facility in 2 places, Providing a drinking water station and wise water management (Zero waste management – Rain water harvesting) were the activities completed in the school.
  4. Government higher Secondary School, Kolathur, Chennai. Refurbishing of a Toilet block as Girls-friendly block, Refurbishing of a Toilet block as user-friendly block for Boys, Hand wash facility in 1 place and Drawing of Pictures in and around all classrooms were the activities completed in the school.
  5. Government high School, Royapuram, Chennai. Refurbishing of a Toilet block as Girls-friendly WASH facility, Refurbishing of a Toilet block as user-friendly for Boys, Hand wash facility in 1 place and Drawing of Pictures and hygiene messages in Toilet Blocks are the activities completed in the school.

Activities in Association with UNICEF– CII – Saint Gobain India – INDIA NGO

Promoting WASH model schools in Sriperumpudhur Block was a joint activity of 4 partner organisations. The goal of the project was to promote sanitation & Hygiene in selected schools of Sriperumpudhur Block and promoting sustained use and maintenance. The CII was the key partner in the WASH in School activity. The cost for construction was supported by Saint Gobain. UNICEF supported the capacity building activities.

INDIA NGO extended technical support for the activity and trained all the teachers and students on sanitation & Hygiene. The schools benefitted by the activities are:


1. Government Girls Higher Secondary School, Sriperumpudhur; 2.Government Higher Secondary School, Maduramangalam; 3. Government Higher Secondary School, Molachur; 4. Government Higher Secondary School, Mathur; 5. Panchayat Union Middle School, Pillaipakkam; 6. Panchayat Union Middle School, Ponthur; and 7. Panchayat Union Middle School, Sunguvar Chatram.
